The cottage
How many people does Riverbank sleep?
Riverbank sleeps up to four adults in two double bedrooms, each with a Euro King bed, plus up to three children in bunk beds in the children’s room.
How many bedrooms are there?
Three: two double bedrooms with Euro King beds, and a bunk room for up to three children.
Can we bring a baby or young children?
Yes, babies and children are very welcome. We have two cots, one large and one small, and a high chair, and the bunk room sleeps up to three children. Just let us know what you need when you book.
Is Riverbank good for families?
Yes. There are two Euro King double bedrooms for the adults, a bunk room for up to three children, two cots (one large, one small) and a high chair, and a wild riverside garden full of wildlife. The beaches, the seal trips from Morston and Blakeney, and Holt are all close by. The river runs along the garden, so please keep an eye on little ones near the water.
Is Riverbank good for two couples or a romantic break?
Yes. The two double bedrooms are both Euro King, so two couples share it easily, and for a couple on their own it’s a romantic hideaway: a cast-iron bath looking out over the river, a wood burner in the panelled inglenook, and candlelit suppers on the riverside terrace.
What makes Riverbank special?
The chalk stream running right along the garden, home to a resident water vole, which very few holiday cottages have; a cast-iron bath positioned to look out over the river and woods; truly dark, quiet nights; and design-led interiors mixing modern and traditional British style, with fabrics and wallpapers from London’s Pimlico Road.
Has Riverbank been in the press?
Yes. Riverbank has been featured in The Telegraph, The Times, the Financial Times, Condé Nast Traveller, Country Living and its Modern Rustic edition, and Suitcase magazine.
What is the cottage like?
Riverbank is a luxurious boutique cottage in Hunworth, near Holt in North Norfolk, inspired by a mix of modern and traditional British design. Richly textured fabrics, patterned wallpapers, painted panelling and carefully chosen pieces make it feel more like a design-led hideaway than a standard holiday let.
Is there a bath?
Yes. There’s a large cast-iron roll-top bath positioned to look straight out over the river and the woods. There’s also a separate shower room with a walk-in shower.
Is there a fire?
Yes. There’s a wood burner in the panelled inglenook in the lounge, with a log store beside it.
Is firewood provided for the wood burner?
Firewood is available as an extra. Just ask when you book.
Is there Wi-Fi?
Yes. The cottage has super-fast full-fibre broadband, at speeds of up to 900Mb/s.
What is the kitchen like?
The kitchen has luxury appliances from Miele and Liebherr, an island, a Belfast sink and wooden worktops, with a dining table beside an old brick fireplace. There’s also a long galley scullery and a walk-in larder.
Is there outside space?
Yes. Riverbank’s garden runs right alongside a clear chalk stream, with a riverside terrace and a deck over the water for eating outside. In spring the banks fill with wild garlic, and a resident water vole lives in the river: sit quietly on the deck and you may spot it.
What wildlife might we see?
Plenty, starting with the resident water vole that lives in the river, now a rare sight in Britain. Listen for woodpeckers in the woods by day and tawny owls at night, watch for kingfishers low along the river, and look out for deer, pheasants, red kites, frogs and toads from the windows or the terrace.
Is it quiet?
Very. There are no street lights, so the nights are truly dark, with big starlit skies. You’ll fall asleep to owls and other night-time wildlife in the surrounding woods, far from traffic and city noise.
Arriving and staying
What are the check-in and check-out times?
Check-in is from 4pm and check-out is by 10am. You can book an early check-in from 2pm. There’s no late check-out as standard, but do ask: it’s sometimes possible if no other guests are arriving that day.
Where do we park?
Parking is on the road outside the cottage.
Dogs
Can I bring my dog?
Yes, dogs are very welcome at Riverbank: we take up to three small to medium dogs (the dog charge is added when you book). We ask that dogs are never left alone in the cottage, are kept on a lead when outside the cottage on the property, and that any mess is bagged (bags are provided free) and put in the grey outside bin.
Are there good dog walks nearby?
Yes, all around Hunworth, straight from the door: lanes, footpaths and riverside tracks through woods and fields. The North Norfolk coast is about fifteen minutes away; at Holkham, dogs need to be on a lead from 1 April to 31 August to protect nesting birds. See our local guide for ideas.
Getting here and the area
Where is Riverbank?
On Kings Street in the hamlet of Hunworth, North Norfolk, two miles south of Holt (postcode NR24 2EH). Our directions page has a map and how to get here by car or train.
How far is it to the coast?
Holt is about five minutes’ drive, and Blakeney and the North Norfolk coast about fifteen minutes. Holkham beach is around twenty minutes away.
Are there walks from the cottage?
Yes. You can step straight out into the Hunworth countryside, following lanes, footpaths and riverside tracks past woods and fields before looping back to the front door. Walks pass St Lawrence’s church and the earthworks of an old castle; Hunworth is even in the Domesday Book.
Is there a pub within walking distance?
Not at the moment. The Hunny Bell in Hunworth is due to reopen in the next year or so. In the meantime there are lots of good pubs a short drive away, all in our local guide.
What is the nearest train station?
Sheringham, about 30 minutes’ drive away.
Booking
How do I book?
Book direct on our booking page, where you can see live availability and prices.
What is your cancellation policy?
We take a 50% deposit when you book, and it’s non-refundable. The remaining 50% is due two months before you arrive, and it’s also non-refundable once paid. Full details are in our terms and conditions.
When do I pay?
Half when you book, as a non-refundable deposit, and the other half two months before you arrive, which is also non-refundable.
Can I change my dates?
Usually not: once a stay is booked, the dates normally can’t be changed.
Can we book both cottages together?
Yes. Our sister cottage, Spinks Nest, shares the same grounds, separated by the old gardener’s sheds and a well: close enough to be together, far enough for privacy. Together the two sleep up to six adults and three children. Book each on its own booking page, or email us at hello@riverbanknorfolk.com and we’ll help.
Can I smoke at the cottage?
No smoking of any kind (including vapes) is allowed inside Riverbank. You’re welcome to smoke on the terrace.
Can I take photos of the cottage for social media?
Of course, for your own memories. Commercial or commercially advantageous photography, including paid social media content, needs our agreement in advance.
Is there anywhere for a couple to stay nearby?
Yes: Spinks Nest, our flint cottage for two, shares the same grounds.
