A perfectly sized, highly considered country retreat. Riverbank is a North Norfolk brick-and-flint worker’s cottage, extended and rebuilt over two years into a luxurious boutique cottage in Hunworth, two miles south of Holt, with a clear chalk stream running along the garden.
The interiors mix modern and traditional British design, with fabrics and wallpapers from London’s Pimlico Road. It sleeps up to four adults in two double bedrooms with Euro King beds, plus up to three children in bunk beds, so it suits families, two couples or friends, and dogs are welcome too. Downstairs there’s a lounge with a wood burner and a wall of glass onto the garden, a kitchen and dining room, a galley scullery with a walk-in larder, and a bootroom for muddy walks.

01
Arriving
The path to Riverbank runs between old flint cottages in Hunworth, and its red-brick front is wrapped in roses and cottage-garden planting. It shares its grounds with Spinks Nest, our flint cottage for two, with the old gardener’s sheds and a well between them. From above you can see the garden running right down to the river; after dark, the glazed lounge glows among the trees.

02
The garden
A wild, green garden with a riverside terrace beneath the trees, a brick garden room, climbing roses over the walls and striped loungers on the lawn. Long lunches happen under the parasol, and the lanes and footpaths start at the gate.

03
The river
A clear chalk stream, the River Glaven, runs right along the garden. Old timber steps lead down to the water, yellow flag irises line the banks, and there’s a deck over the stream for drinks in the sun and a fire pit at the water’s edge. Look out for the resident water vole.

04
The lounge
A panelled inglenook with a wood burner and a log store at one end, and a wall of glass onto the garden at the other. Patterned wallpaper, velvet armchairs, Persian rugs, a window seat and shelves of books: made for slow evenings with a glass of wine or a board game while the fire crackles.

05
Kitchen & dining
A teal-painted island, striped tiles, a Belfast sink and wooden worktops, with luxury appliances from Miele and Liebherr, shelves of spices and blue-and-white Delft tiles by the window. The dining table sits beside an old brick fireplace, ready for long breakfasts and big suppers.

06
Scullery & larder
A long galley scullery under the skylights, with a plate rack, open shelves of crockery and turquoise glazed doors, and a walk-in larder beside it. All the space you need to cook for a houseful.

07
The bootroom
Olive-painted panelling, brick and flint walls, a bench for pulling off boots after a riverside walk, framed butterflies and porcelain light switches. The stairs lead up from here.

08
The bathroom
The large cast-iron bath is positioned to look straight out over the river and the woods, turning an everyday bath into a spa-like ritual. Brass taps, a bath rack, botanical prints and an old pine door complete it.

09
The shower room
Dark timber walls, star-and-cross tiles, a walk-in shower behind reeded glass, a high-level cistern and a geometric pendant beneath the skylight.

10
Bedroom one
Under the eaves, with a Euro King bed, a skylight, floral wallpaper and wicker pendant lights, a green longcase clock beside the fitted wardrobes and a mahogany chest of drawers. Prints and a mirror line the picture shelf.

11
Bedroom two
A Euro King bed against patterned wallpaper, a Victorian fireplace and a blue quilt, with a reading nook through an arched doorway and a writing desk beneath a round window.

12
The bunk room
Bunk beds for up to three children, with a big map on the wall and shelves of books and painted wooden skittles. For younger guests we have two cots, one large and one small, and a high chair.

13
The details
Botanical wallpaper, framed insects, block-printed throws and bottles on dark shelves: the small, carefully chosen things that make Riverbank feel like a home rather than a holiday let.
